Once upon a Shephard’s Cottage
The Shepherd’s Cottage at Overgaauw was originally built in the late 1700s to house the local shepherd. It’s a quaint cottage with thick, old whitewashed walls and small windows protected by green shutters, each with a heart carved out in its centre. Four generations of Van Veldens have made wine at Overgaauw. For the last two generations, the newlywed Van Velden children have had the privilege of calling this their home for the first few years of their married life. Along with the rest of the Shepherd’s Cottage range of wines, this red celebrates the warmth, commitment and love shared in this humble home.
It’s a 60/40 blend, where the minimal use of oak allows the true character of the cultivars to come to the fore. The Cabernet Sauvignon offers structure combined with rich blackberry flavours, while the Merlot adds ripe, juicy black cherry truffle flavours with hints of violets. It’s a voluptuous, generous and smooth wine with fine ripe tannins designed for immediate enjoyment and up to 5 years ageing.
