Once upon a Shephard’s Cottage

The Shepherd’s Cottage at Overgaauw was originally built in the late 1700s to house the local shepherd. It’s a quaint cottage with thick, old whitewashed walls and small windows protected by green shutters, each with a heart carved out in its centre. Four generations of Van Veldens have made wine at Overgaauw. For the last two generations, the newlywed Van Velden children have had the privilege of calling this their home for the first few years of their married life. Along with the rest of the Shepherd’s Cottage range of wines, this red celebrates the warmth, commitment and love shared in this humble home.

The Shed - Overgaauw Wine Estate

Our winemaker David van Velden’s comments:

As with all the wines produced in the Overgaauw cellar, the Shepherd’s Cottage wines carry a quality signature: the commitment from the winemaking team to produce the best from the carefully-nurtured fruit the harvest has to offer.

It’s a 60/40 blend, where the minimal use of oak allows the true character of the cultivars to come to the fore. The Cabernet Sauvignon offers structure combined with rich blackberry flavours, while the Merlot adds ripe, juicy black cherry truffle flavours with hints of violets. It’s a voluptuous, generous and smooth wine with fine ripe tannins designed for immediate enjoyment and up to 5 years ageing.

Overgaauw wine

Our flagship blend consists of “three hearts” of the Estate: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

The Overgaauw Merlot 1982 was the maiden bottling of this cultivar in South Africa. To this day, it remains a classic expression of Merlot.
