The 2018/2019 growing season challenged our industry once again, as with the previous two vintages, and pushed us quite out of our comfort zone. Farming in the “Cape of Storms”, we were always used to very wet and long winters, with occasional showers during the growing season. This climatic pattern has changed drastically since the early 2000s and it is changing the way we farm.

Being a dryland farm, we have to look to the future and farm in the present to preserve our sustainability. Regenerative and sustainable farming is not just another buzzword or marketing strategy, but the only way to survive and thrive. Looking towards heaven seems to be our first reaction in difficult times, forgetting where we stand whilst looking up – the soil. The industrial revolution has spawned synthetic fertilizers that brought a disconnect between man and soil that we only now start to see the effect of, nearly two generations on. As caretakers of this land, we must start to feed the land instead of fertilizing it. Where does one start?

We have taken on a zero-waste policy with regards to any compostable organics. We have started to see the trees and shrubs on the farm as part of the holistic cycle, much like the biodynamic way of thinking. Composting is now a big part of our operation and viticulture, and although we only really started three years ago, we have seen some major results in the vineyards, the soil and the wines.

Last winter we put down all the compost that was ready. We got about 2/3 of the way on one section of the farm when we ran out of compost on a Merlot vineyard. The result during the season was astonishing. It was even visible from space! Have a look:

This is an NDVI – a measurement index for plant health and vegetative growth. The parts in the white circle received composting during the winter and the rest didn’t. The section of the vineyard that received composting handled the drought so well, even producing a slightly larger crop with better berries, better juice and better wine. A testament to the progressive approach we have taken on and which we’ll expand in the coming years.

We have also been very busy eradicating leaf roll virus where possible, and it is with great delight that we have a large portion of the farm 100% leaf roll virus free. This is an ongoing fight, and we have natural predators that help us in the battle. We regularly release specific lady birds and wasps that predate on the mealybug (they spread leaf roll virus) to help us contain the virus. Although this virus is harmless to humans, it threatens the sustainability and longevity of a vineyard and impacts negatively on the quality.

To summarise the 2019 vintage, we had a good harvest. Our hard work paid off and our vineyards had a breeze during the season and produced stunning wines. We will continue to build our soil health during winter with more compost and cover crops, and will interplant new, virus-free Merlot and Cabernet Franc vines in the virus-free vineyards, to keep the vineyards in the ground for another 100 years.

He built his wine cellar four years later, literally laying the foundation for the generations to follow, and shifting the farm’s focus to all things vinous. So commenced Overgaauw’s production of wine – initially only for bulk sale.

1945 | David van Velden Snr

1945 marked a new era, with Abraham’s son David (Senior) taking over management of the farm, and introducing Port varietals to the blessed terroir. He planted five different cultivars – Tinta Barocca, Tinta Francisca, Cornifesto, Souzão and Tinta Roriz – and in accordance with traditional Portuguese methods, he harvested and crushed the grapes together. This was an industry first in South Africa.

1963 saw another innovation with the introduction of Sylvaner to the South African landscape. To this day, the Van Veldens are the only local producers of this German varietal.

David then decided to bottle his wine under the Overgaauw label – a decision that inspired a journey to France in 1969. Accompanied by Frans Malan of Simonsig, he visited Châteaux Lafite and Mouton Rothschild. The travellers’ exposure to the classic, French techniques of winemaking brought about a significant change to the South African winemaking industry: Encouraged to pioneer the ageing of red wine in small oak barrels, they acquired their first barriques from Château Latour and changed forever the quality of red wine production in South Africa.

With the inception of the Wine and Spirit Board in 1973, Overgaauw became one of the first farms to register as an “Estate”, an event that bestowed the appellation of “Estate Wine” on the label of every bottled wine made from the farm’s grapes.

David’s son, Braam, remembers as a child the hard work required: “There was no trellising back then, no automation, no herbicides, no irrigation. We even had to weed by hand. I still remember using Percheron horses on the farm right up until the late ‘60s. I was the touleier, the guy who walks in front with the horses and leads them up and down the rows of bush vines.”

1970
Among the first to mature Cabernet Sauvignon in French barriques.
First in South Africa to produce Cinsaut.

1971 – present day
The only producer of the Sylvaner – a refreshing and medium-bodied, aromatic and spicy German varietal.
First South African wine estate to plant Portuguese Port cultivars.

1973
Founder member of Stellenbosch Wine Route (now covering over 120 cellars, the route started with just 8 wineries).

1973 | Braam Van Velden

In 1973, the baton was passed to the third generation of Van Veldens – David Snr’s only son, Braam. A graduate from Stellenbosch University with a BCom degree, Braam spent a year at the Geisenheim Institute of Wine in Germany where he studied viticulture. Together with viniculture, this became his passion.

Following the Van Velden way of intensive, hard work; Braam engaged in an exhaustive mapping of the farm’s soils in the late 1970s, to determine the best-matched varietals to terroir. At the start of Braam’s tenure, 90% of the farm was planted to white varietals. Today, almost 60% of vineyards are planted to reds. With these new vine establishments came the opportunity to plant different clones – which contribute to the complexity found in the Overgaauw wines.

In true pioneering fashion, Braam achieved a number of industry firsts. He produced the acclaimed Tria Corda, South Africa’s first Bordeaux blend and bottled the country’s first single-varietal Merlot – at a time when this now-popular wine was regarded as suitable only for blending. He was also among the first local producers to plant Chardonnay.

Braam had great trouble keeping his young son, David, out of the cellar and out of harm’s way. When David turned five, Braam gave up and accepted him as his constant shadow and junior cellar hand, offering him his first wine tasting at age six. A fourth-generation Van Velden winemaker was inevitable.

1979: First Bordeaux blend in South Africa, Tria Corda.

1982: First South African estate to bottle a single-varietal Merlot.

1984: Founder member of the Cape Wine Makers Guild.

David grew up on Overgaauw. When he took his first steps, they were in the direction of the cellar where his father Braam had great trouble keeping young David out of the cellar and out of harm’s way. When David turned five, Braam gave up and had to be content with David as his constant shadow. Needless to say, he experienced his first wine tastings rather early on.

After matriculating at Paul Roos in Stellenbosch, David obtained a Commerce degree at the University of Stellenbosch. He shifted his focus to viticulture and winemaking. In 2003, David joined Overgaauw as assistant winemaker. Four years later he became the fourth-generation Van Velden winemaker at Overgaauw.

His philosophy in winemaking starts with meticulous vineyard management; applying practices to maintain the natural balance in the soil and assisting the vines to produce the best fruit the site and vintage has to offer. In the cellar, the focus is on retaining the various cultivars’ unique ‘Overgaauw’ identity, with minimal cellar manipulation and the judicious use of wood.

He is resolutely proud to be continuing a line of winemaking pioneers – the sense of respect for the land and legacy deeply ingrained in his DNA. This heritage of 110 years of Van Velden wine-making has stood David in good stead as he puts his stamp on the Overgaauw Wines.

Born into a committed enterprise, playing games among the vines and later longing to sample new vintages, meant that the Van Velden kids have always been inadvertently “groomed” into the family passion, and had no hesitation in succeeding their respective fathers as winemaker. This father-son succession spans four generations and is an absolute privilege in today’s business landscape.

Both Oom Braam and his father, David Snr, were literally born into the business – their deliveries taking place right here in the main house, where winemaker David now lives. It’s highly likely that their first sights, sounds and smells (besides that of their loving parents) were all things vinous.

Our current winemaker David, though born in a hospital, demonstrated the same kind of childhood passion as if he’d been among the very vines. Ever curious and enquiring, it became harder and harder for Braam (our third-generation winemaker) to keep him out of the cellar – and out of harm’s way. One early morning, five-year-old David arrived at the cellar door in his pyjamas, eager to participate in the cellar activities. Braam and his team were busy filtering, which required regular tasting to determine when the water had been pushed through and the pipes were full of wine. Braam succumbed to his little son’s remarkable eagerness and allowed him a taste of his very first glass of wine – provided he spat and did not swallow. The young opportunist abruptly swallowed the wine before returning the glass and running away swiftly.

Braam has such fond memories of his “free-range” childhood that he nurtured this freedom with his own children too. The whole farm was their playground, except of course for the dams (on account of the child-toe nibbling otters that magically disappeared once the kids knew how to swim) and the wine cellar (except by permission) – thus cultivating a perfect blend of love for nature and respect for winemaking processes.

This respect for wine always extended to the Sunday lunch table too – where, throughout the generations, children have been granted small sips of watered-down wine to savour and appreciate. Naturally, as they reached early adulthood, “waterwine” would no longer cut it, and they graduated to the pure and undiluted variety.

Today, these traditions still endure. Childhood stories are told and retold, and the family history repeats itself – these unassuming but powerful legacies enriching the ground for future generations of Van Velden winemakers.

Between the first Overgaauw bride of 1917, Oumagrootjie Moena, and the most recent Mrs Van Velden, Rina-Marie in 2010; wedding trends and tastes have naturally changed. Ten different brides from very different eras have each chosen distinct venues, fashions, food and flowers – from traditional church weddings to celebrations right here in the Shed and even some in the gardens, in the old kraal, the barrel maturation cellar and in a tent next to the dam. But not all tastes have changed. An ever-present guest at each wedding has been Overgaauw wine itself – swiftly arriving at every toast, every meal and at the bejewelled hand of every bride.

In a particularly inspired moment, David Snr, who had started the tasting room, came upon a photograph that epitomised two of his favourite things – Overgaauw wine and family celebrations. It was a picture of his son’s bride Annelie enjoying a glass of the estate’s wine, and he decided to frame and hang it on the wall of his new tasting room, built during the same year as the wedding – 1973.

As tends to happen at Overgaauw (and really, with all great ideas), it became a bit of a tradition, and the wedding photos of every Van Velden marriage thereafter included a shot of the happy bride with a glass of Overgaauw wine. These portraits now take pride of place in the tasting room, above the counter.

Unfortunately, not quite all the Van Velden brides are up there on the wall with our beloved wine. Oumagrootjie Moena, the first bride of Overgaauw wine estate and wife of the first winemaker, Abraham Julius van Velden, is absent. Sadly we couldn’t track down any of her wedding photos, probably because it was around 1917 and wedding photography was not the thriving industry that it is today. You might also notice that Ouma Jeanne (David Snr’s bride) is posed sans wine. This is because in 1948, polite society did not deem this kind of thing proper. But we like to believe that her glass was in fact present, just cleverly hidden behind her bouquet.

The Shepherd’s Cottage range is the latest addition to our family of wines, but the inspiration behind it is the oldest story on our land.

The Shepherd’s Cottage is an actual, bona fide, cottage on our farm – with the impressive status as the estate’s oldest structure. As the name suggests, it began its humble existence as a home for a shepherd – when sheep grazed this land back in the late 1700s.

But it was 200 years later, in 1972, that the charming little whitewashed house was renovated to take on the role it was always meant for – a cosy family home furnished with traditions both old and new. David Snr, the second generation winemaker in charge at the time, made some adjustments to convert it into a snug, two-roomed cottage – perfect as a starter house for a young family.

Janet and Pieter (Cheese) Hundersmarck were happy to claim first residency and inaugurate an Overgaauw custom that would be continued by a long line of Van Velden newlyweds. The rough rule was that you could live at Shepherd’s Cottage for a minimum of two years, or until the next couple got married and kicked you out (gently, of course). David’s son Braam and his wife Annelie were next in line, followed by Isabeau and Frik, Marguerite and Erik, Suzanne and Johann, Janet and Charl, present-day winemaker David and his wife Nicole, and today, Niel and Rina. And so continues a tradition of new beginnings, family celebrations, pregnancy announcements, many toasts, great wine, Bruce Springsteen records and legendary parties – all under one zinc roof.

In recent years, a roof and extra stoep section were added, but otherwise the beautiful home you see today is still the original structure – right up to the 250-year-old clay and bamboo ceiling. Over the many seasons, each young couple has come to know the unique and enduring character of the cottage: Its cool comfort in summer, the smokey fireplace of the freezing cold winter, the terrifying first cracks of acorns falling on the roof in the middle of an autumn night, the panicked cry of guinea-fowls outside, the spectacular view of one of many suns or moons that have risen over the age-old Stellenbosch mountains.

And then there’s also the scent – the smell of grape skins during the summer harvest, which moves silently indoors, mingling with the dust of old walls and new people, to make itself at home. It’s really no wonder then, that Shepherd’s Cottage – this intersection of memory, land and family – became the name of our new wine range. When we gathered to brainstorm a name, it featured on each person’s list of suggestions – a testament to the cottage’s special significance to each family member.

We like to think that these scents, sounds, celebrations and enduring traditions are somehow embodied in this wine range. In fact, if you enjoy a glass while taking in the magical view of the Stellenbosch mountains, you’re pretty much guaranteed to hear the faint strains of “Dancing in the Dark”.
